Fall Ball Abroad 2024 is Underway
Old World's third annual Fall Ball Abroad program is currently running in Amsterdam, with 10 student-athletes participating from Amherst, Bates, Haverford, Macalester and Westfield State. The 2024 program includes training opportunities with the Amsterdam Pirates (the largest baseball/softball club in Europe) and the Dutch 19U elite training academy for baseball and softball athletes, as well as group excursions to Haarlem (Netherlands) and Ghent (Belgium). Old World Completes 12th Annual Europe HS Trip
Old World's 12th annual Europe trip for HS and young college ballplayers ran from June 27 - July 7, 2024. The 2024 trip included 21 players, 5 coaches, 4 countries (Czechia, Slovakia, Austria and Germany), 6 cities and towns (Prague, Brno, Bratislava, Vienna, Salzburg and Munich), 7 games and 4 national team opponents (Czechia 18U, Great Britain 18U, Sweden 18U and Slovakia's Senior NT). OWB finished the trip with a 3-3 record (one game was cut short by rain).
Old World's Tom Gillespie Signs Ugandan Ballplayer
Old World Co-Founder Tom Gillespie, an international scout for the Pittsburgh Pirates, recently signed David Matoma (Uganda) to a professional contract with the Pirates organization. Old World's Stephan Rapaglia Elected to British Baseball Hall of Fame
Old World Co-Founder Stephan Rapaglia was recently elected to the 2022 class of the British Baseball Hall of Fame. Stephan was elected on the basis of his successful tenure as Head Coach of the Great Britain National Team from 2004-2010, which tenure included a silver medal at the 2007 European Championships. Old World's first-ever trip for current and former college baseball players ran from June 18 - 26, 2022, with time spent in Vienna and Prague. Old World organized a team composed of US and European players to compete in Prague Baseball Week (https://pbw.baseball.cz/en/) against international opponents such as the Czech and Spanish Senior National Teams. Old World's coaching staff included two members of the Great Britain National Team coaching staff for the World Baseball Classic, including GB head coach Drew Spencer.
Old World's Tom Gillespie Leads German 18U National Team in 2018 European Championships
In, 2018, Tom Gillespie completed his second 18U European Championships as Head Coach of the German Junior National Team. Tom previously led the German team to the Bronze Medal in the 2016 European Championships.
Old World's Tom Gillespie Cited in Gift Ngoepe MLB Promotion Article
Tom Gillespie played a key role in reuniting South Africa's Ngoepe brothers (Gift and Victor) in the Pittsburgh Pirates' organization, with Old World's Tom Gillespie being the international scout responsible for signing Victor. Older brother Gift became the first African-born player to make the big leagues, and Tom was cited in the first MLB.com story about Gift's promotion.
